Green Flag Award
‘St Mary’s special school community celebrated our new Green Flag award for Biodiversity yesterday. The senior students have worked very hard over two years and led the junior classes in growing their awareness and understanding of how to help our wildlife both in the school garden and at home.
Supported by their teachers and special needs assistants the students re-built their school raised beds and are growing some lovely crops of potatoes, lettuces and strawberries. There is also a lovely wildflower corner and a mini forest with sapling trees starting to grow tall.
The students were joined by several guests from the local community as they proudly raised their new flag and then celebrated in style. We are delighted to be a member of the Eco-Schools family which follows the green schools curriculum in 62 countries around the world. It enables the students to flourish as part of a team which starts by making the school environment more sustainable and nature friendly and then grows this outwards to the community. ‘
